Currently, four Sámi gravesites have been found. There are six gravesites in total, but two of these have not been dated to which era they belong. Two shaman gravesites have been found, which has been mentioned before.
According to tales, there is a Sámi burial island in Ahonsaari, in Lake Muojärvi. The place has not been investigated, however, but some signs of the burial are visible.
There are shallow depressions visible in Lake Välijärvi’s Kalmaniemi. The cape is formed of sandy isthmus, which would be very suitable for a Sámi gravesite.
All in all, there are a total of 16 Ruumissaari (lit. ‘corpse island’, burial island) in Kuusamo, which are gravesites of either the Finns or the Sámi.
