After the hostilities began, the main part of the battalion stationed in Kuusamo was sent to Alassalmi in Suomussalmi to receive the enemy who had crossed the border at Juntusranta.
After the end of the Winter War, Kuusamo lived in uncertainty. Characteristic of this period, which lasted more than a year, were the fortification works, which were used to secure the roads leading to the eastern border.
The Continuation War was fought from 25.6.1941 to 4.9.1944 on the Finnish front at the same time as Germany carried out the large-scale attack on the Soviet Union known as Operation Barbarossa.
Kuusamo became one of the focus areas of warfare after the Kiestinki attack.
