Lämsänkylä

Treasures and history tinged by wars

Are you familiar with Kuusamo’s axe? The axe-shaped plate pendant, which became familiar as a Kalevala jewellery series, is part of the silver treasure found in Kuusamo’s Lämsänkylä.

The history of the Lämsänkylä area near the eastern border is coloured by wars. The restored Lahtela fortress of Salpa Line with its trenches is an impressive monument and a place to visit.

The history of Lämsänkylä has been written down accurately through the stories of the people who lived there, thanks to the local heritage councillor Helena Palosaari.

By the way, a Kuusamo dozen is ten Määttä and a Lämsä at both ends. Lämsä means a limping walk or a bundle of leashes, depending on the speaker.

Lämsänkyläntie is the road to the border between Finland and Russia, where the official border crossing point of Suoperä currently operates.
