Kuusamo’s famous rapids Jyrävä, Aallokkoski, Myllykoski and Niskakoski are flowing freely near the village. Juuma is the starting point of the Pieni Karhunkierros trail. There are several suspension bridges along the route, and rare plants grow on the slopes of the streams, such as north’s calypso orchid and the white dryad.
Lummiskonlahti in Lake Ala-Juumajärvi is famous for its water lilies. You can see up to 7 000 water lilies in Lummiskonlahti. Clear water and deep Lake Ajakka also lives up to its name. Ajakka is Sámi language and means spring. Juuma probably got its name from the Sámi word juime, which means small bay.
On the way to Juuma, a dizzying landscape opens up at the northern end of the Ruka-Valtavaara line of forest covered hills. The road leading to Juuma runs on a sandy isthmus past small lakes. The clear water Lake Ajakka, which falls to 38 meters at its deepest point, lives up to its name.
